Counselling
“Our view of reality is like a map with which to negotiate the terrain of life. If the map is true and accurate, we will generally know where we are, and if we have decided where we want to go, we will generally know how to get there. If the map is false and inaccurate, we will be lost.”
(Scott Peck, 1990)
Here at Infinite Possibilities Counselling, we aim to provide a safe and confidential space for you to talk about your issues, worries and concerns. Undertaking counselling, with us, will help you explore your thoughts, feelings and behaviours leading to a better understanding of yourself and of others. Sometimes there is so much going on externally that we stop looking internally. Your ability to manage emotions, cope with and understand your feelings, and/or how you see yourself and the world, may have become blurred through life experiences from childhood to current day.
Aiding you to find your own solutions – whether that’s making effective changes in your life or finding ways of coping with your problems is the crux of counselling. It is not about offering advice and opinions, this comes from within, however we will support you to become a more successful version of yourself. It is important, therefore, that by the end of the counselling relationship, you, the client, are more equipped to navigate the difficulties being faced in your life today. It aims to assist you to stimulate personal growth in order to cope with life’s problems and inner conflict, as well as to provide a safe space to reflect on losses or self-defeating patterns. Ultimately counselling involves helping each individual client make autonomous decisions and therefore take rational actions consistent with their identity and objectives.
Here at Infinite Possibilities Counselling, we recognise that each client is unique in what they bring, and in that respect, the therapeutic relationship is developed to reflect this. It centres entirely around you and your needs. It is an empathic and unconditional collaboration, where there is no judgement or criticism, therefore creating a safe environment to release thoughts, feelings and problems. At its core, it is is a relationship of absolute trust where confidentiality becomes the key to facilitate this.

Trauma & Abuse
TRAUMA
Trauma is a term used to describe the challenging emotional consequences that living through a distressing event can have for an individual. Traumatic events can be difficult to define because the same event may be more traumatic for some people than for others.
ABUSE
Abuse is when someone causes us harm or distress. It can take many forms, ranging from disrespect to causing someone physical or mental pain. Abuse is always unacceptable. Everyone has the right to be treated with dignity and respect. No-one has the right to abuse other people. Abuse can happen once or can be something that happens over weeks, months or years. It can be accidental or deliberate. Just because there is no injury that someone can see it does not mean there is no abuse.

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)
According to BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) EMDR is a comprehensive psychotherapy that helps you process and recover from past experiences that are affecting your mental health and wellbeing.
It involves using side to side eye movements combined with talk therapy in a specific and structured format. EMDR was developed – and is best known – as a therapy for treating trauma or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It is recognised by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) as a treatment for PTSD. But it can be used to help with a range of mental health difficulties including anxiety, depression, addictions, behavioural difficulties, relationship issues and more serious mental illnesses such as psychosis and personality disorders.
Infinite Possibilites Counselling will guide you through the stages.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
Cognitive behavioural therapy can be used as a short-term treatment to help individuals learn to focus on present thoughts, beliefs, behaviours and actions. Numerous research studies suggest that CBT leads to significant improvement in functioning and quality of life.
It is based on the concept that your thoughts, feelings, physical sensations and actions are interconnected, and that negative thoughts and feelings can trap you in a negative cycle. It aims to help you deal with overwhelming problems in a more positive way by breaking them down into smaller parts. Treatment usually involves efforts to change thinking and behavioural patterns. Strategies used to identify these patterns may include:
- Learning to recognize one’s distortions in thinking that are creating problems, and then to reevaluate them in light of reality.
- Gaining a better understanding of the behaviour and motivation of self and also others.
- Using problem-solving skills to cope with difficult situations.
- Learning to develop a greater sense of confidence in one’s own abilities.

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)
Infinite Possibilities Counselling can offer EFT if deemed it would be helpful in your therapy journey, as part of the integrative counselling service we offer.
EFT (also known as tapping) is an evidence-based therapy that combines tapping and psychology. It has effectively treated various issues, including anxiety, depression, phobia and trauma. EFT involves lightly tapping specific points of the body while repeating carefully crafted positive phrases. This dual attention often leads to rapid positive change, helping resolve emotional issues. In many cases, EFT can be applied directly to physical symptoms for pain relief without exploring any emotional contributors.
